The design of the Mason 43 includes everything you could desire in an offshore sailboat. The design focuses on comfort both in the cockpit and below deck, and an overall construction referenced by critics as nothing short of bulletproof.
Defiant has been tested thoroughly offshore, making multiple transits to and from the Gulf of Mexico, but has predominantly been seasonally operated in Penobscot Bay. The design features intended for offshore sailing provides a tremendous cruising range and the ability to hop around the many beautiful harbors in Penobscot bay for weeks without the need to fill up on fuel or water. With over 200+ gallons of water capacity, 104 gallons of fuel, upgraded refrigeration/freezer system, large blackwater holding tank, full length chain anchor, electric windlass, water heater, and fully enclosed stand-up shower, the Mason 43 offers an impressive level of comfort. The focus on comfort extends to the layout of the vessel both in the cockpit and below deck. The design of the Mason 43 utilized a unique off-centered companion way, which is one of the easiest ways to identify these vessels. The genius of the off-centered companion way allows for an additional athwartship seating area in the cockpit, as well as an aft cabin which has been reviewed by professionals as one of genius features of the design. The design offers a spacious cockpit for lounging with larger groups bot underway and while moored, as well as an aft cabin below deck providing a single berth and a double berth, both with side access to the bunks and ample overhead space.
The Mason 43 is a heavy displacement boat, weighing in at just below 30,000 lbs. The weight is mainly concentrated within the vessels full keel hull, which incorporates an 18’ lead keel base generating an incredible amount of stability below the waterline. To compensate for the weight of the vessel, the Mason 43 design carries an oversized sail plan for the length of the vessel and cruises at comfortable speeds in even light winds. In heavy winds, the cutter rig and multiple reefing points on the main, allows for control and reducing the sail plan with relative ease. In addition to the sail configuration, the vessel has been repowered with a larger 55 HP straight drive engine which provides dependable, smooth, and quiet power to the vessel based on its positioning below the vessels sound reducing floorboards.
Defiant has been a cherished boat by both its current and previous owners. The current owners of the vessel are active Merchant Marine Officers who have recently begun chartering the vessel for periods of the summer to help offset some of the costs of ownership. It also brings the owners joy to see the boat used while they are deployed through their Merchant Marine careers.
